Finally, it confirmed – Apple launches macOS Sierra on this September 20th. The official confirmation regarding this came from Apple’s official website on yesterday associated with annual Apple Event for fall. At the same time, this Apple Event has a lot of offerings for gadget freaks as well – including 2nd series of Apple Watch and the new iPhone 7 and 7 plus. But this time, let’s focus on Sierra.

Assuming that many of you have tried any of the public betas of Sierra, I’d like to start. Mac Sierra is the 13th major release of MacOS(Apple’s desktop and Server OS for Mac machines). Its first Public beta version was released on July 7 this year.

And, Mac users can freely upgrade to this OS through Mac App Store.

Minimum System Requirements for Mac Sierra – Official

According to Apple, the following Mac models are supported by Sierra

  • iMac (late-2009 and later)
  • MacBook (late-2009 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2010 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2010 and later)
  • Mac mini (2010 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2010 and later)

Anyhow, Apple hasn’t specified the requirements for specific Sierra features such as Siri, Apple Pay, Auto Unlock, etc. to run smoothly. Even iMac 2009 is specified here, some of the Sierra’s features are not likely to support in machines like this.

Well, if you ask me to choose the best 5 features of Sierra, here’s my list.

  • Siri Integration
  • Universal Clipboard
  • Improved File Sync with iCloud
  • Picture- in Picture Mode (PiP)
  • Unlocking with Apple Watch

Let’s go through each of these items.

Siri Inptegration It is Microsoft that showed having a personal assistant for desktop, can radically change our approach to desktop computers. Even though, Apple’s approach towards this wasn’t initially positive, now we can see their transformation. For Apple, integrating Siri into Mac isn’t a much big deal – It’s been in iPhones and iPads more than half a decade.

Universal Clipboard: Universal Clipboard allows y`ou to easily copy and paste items across your differe.nt Apple devices. Its working is quite simple. When you copy items (whatever it is) into one device’s clipboard, those items will be automatically uploaded into iCloud making it accessible to all your Apple devices. The main advantage of this clipboard is that – you don’t have to think about services like AirDrop in future. The only requirement for this feature is, all the devices should be running either Sierra or iOS 10 using the same Apple ID.

Improved File Sync with iCloud: Now, you know about how Universal Clipboard feature helps to synchronize files on your Sierra with iCloud. If you enable “iCloud integration” in your Sierra in selected file location, the files from there will be automatically synchronized with iCloud, allowing to access those files from anywhere. Your iCloud drive is also accessible if you log into to iCloud.com.

Picture-in-Picture Mode (PiP): This shows a small video widow that remains on top of the screen. It will remain open all the time. And it won’t stop even If you switch between different apps. As a perfect aid for multitasking, you can do multiple things at a time using this. For example, you can work with office documents while watching videos. So far, PiP option has integrated to various video streaming websites like Vimeo (YouTube isn’t supported yet). For using this option, you have to open the video page using Safari browser on your Sierra machine. From the video

support controls, you can find PiP icon.

Unlocking with Apple Watch: Sierra allows you to skip the password login screen using an Apple Watch. For that, you have to enable the option “Allow your Apple Watch to Unlock your Mac” in “Security and Privacy” from Sierra’s “System Preferences”. Then you need to enable two-Factor Authentication from iCloud account settings. Finally, you can set the passcode in your Apple Watch.

Bottom Line

The new version “Sierra” is the first Mac OS that follows Apple’s updated naming scheme. As many of you know, Apple has completely changed its naming conventions for its devices. New devices and products from Apple will follow this convention. For example, desktop operating systems will be known with MacOS instead of OS X. Likeways, there’ll be WatchOS, iOS, tvOS according to respective gadgets.
